Assignats were paper currency issued by the French Assembly in 1789 and used as a monetary instrument during the French Revolution and the French Revolutionary war from 1789-1796. Originally regarded as bonds, assignats were redefined as legal tender in 1790 to address a national liquidity crisis. Backed by the value of properties formerly held by the Catholic church, they were felt to be secure, however when the French Government issued an additional 800 million livres in September 1790, this perception diminished quickly. By the beginning of 1793, the French Government, unable to keep assignats stable, demonetized 558 million livres and consolidated them into public debt. This action along with the outbreak of wars and the fall of the French Monarchy doomed the assignats to virtual worthlessness. Due to a fortunate purchase, we can offer Crisp Uncirculated 50 Sol assignats which were used almost 225 years ago during the French Revolution.
