This Crisp AU/UNC German 50 Pfennig note dated November 1, 1921 features a hooded horseman, his head facing the past as his horse gallops into the future. Behind him is a large billowing red cloud, a horrible reminder of Germany’s loss in World War I. But the hooded horseman is looking behind that cloud, longing for the “Good ‘ol Days”, to a slower and happier time. He must of known that Germany’s near future was not something to look forward to, and he was right, as it would be another three years before Germany could begin to heal the wounds created by the rampant inflation and chaotic economic times of the early 1920’s.
