William Jennings Bryan (1860-1925) was a lawyer, statesman and politician. After serving in the House of Representatives (1891-1895), he became the youngest presidential candidate ever when he was chosen by the Democratic Party in 1896. Although he lost to McKinley, he remained strong in the party and was nominated a second time in 1900, but again lost to McKinley. After another nomination in 1908 and another loss, this time to Taft, his presidential aspirations ended. He did continue in politics however, and in 1913 was appointed as Secretary of State by President Wilson. Bryan, a devout Christian and opponent of Darwinism, is probably best known for his participation in the highly publicized Scopes Trial (1925), serving as counsel for the World Christian Fundamentals Association.
