With the assassination of John F. Kennedy in Dallas on November 22, 1963, Lyndon Baines Johnson became our 36th President. In August 1964 he was nominated by the Democratic Party to be its Presidential candidate. In a very lopsided election, he defeated Republican rival Barry Goldwater and served his own four-year term as President of the United States.
