The date was June 5, 1968. The place: Los Angeles, California at the Ambassador Hotel. Senator Robert Kennedy had just won the California primary, beating out Senator Eugene McCarthy. The victory gave him 172 delegates at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. Kennedy had just left the victory celebration when shots rang out from a .22 revolver. Senator Kennedy was hit twice, with the fatal blow penetrating his brain. He died the next day, on June 6, 1968. There is little doubt that Robert Kennedy would have secured his party’s presidential nomination, and many political scholars predicted that he would have defeated Richard Nixon and would have become our 37th president. We will never know.
