The 1883 “V” or Liberty nickel first appeared without the word “CENTS” anywhere on the coin. The only denomination was a large V on the reverse. When some of these coins were gold plated and passed off as $5.00 gold pieces, the government was forced to act quickly and add the word “CENTS”.
