Dr. Hugo Eckener (1868-1954) was the guiding force of the Zeppelin Company both during and after World War I. Hired as a publicist in 1908, he quickly excelled and became head of the company upon the death of Ferdinand Von Zeppelin in 1917. An engineer, a marketer and a public relations genius, Eckener successfully negotiated a deal to present a Zeppelin to the United States as part of Germany’s World War I reparations. This Zeppelin became known as the U.S.S. Los Angeles. In the midst of tremendous post-World War I upheaval in Germany, Eckener masterfully convinced the German public to donate to the Zeppelin Company to keep it solvent. Just as they had done for Kaiser Wilhelm II during World War I for his “Gold for Iron” appeal, the German public responded positively to “Zeppelin Eckener Spende”. In appreciation of financial support, this special pin was awarded to those who donated. Made of silk and woven in four colors, this 1.75 inch oval-shaped pin features the name of the cause and shows a Zeppelin in flight. The reverse, goldine in color, displays the hallmark of Dr. R.
