The German World War I Cross of Honor was instituted by Adolf Hitler’s Third Reich on July 13, 1934, and was the only commemorative military award issued during this period. Its purpose was to recognize the veterans who served, and fell, during the Great War (World War I), however, many felt that it was actually Hitler’s attempt to sway veterans to the New Order by rewarding them for their past service to the Fatherland. This medal, measuring 1.5” x 1.5”, displays a Maltese cross with a deep bronze finish, with the dates 1914-1918 embossed in the center surrounded by an oak leaf wreath and crossed swords.
