As the Democrats convened in Chicago in July of 1944, President Roosevelt’s renomination was ensured, and, as expected, he won on the first ballot with 1,086 votes to 89 for the nearest competitor, Senator Harry Byrd of Virginia. This historic vote gave F.D.R. an unprecedented fourth consecutive nomination! Because of the President’s declining health, many delegates believed that in choosing a running mate they were selecting the next president. Due to overwhelming opposition for Vice President Henry Wallace, Roosevelt reluctantly dumped him from the ticket in favor of Harry Truman of Missouri. Truman originally balked but relented when the President proclaimed, “Tell him if he wants to break up the Democratic Party in the middle of a war, that’s his responsibility.” Truman was nominated for vice president on the second ballot.
