This very colorful 1000 Rials note from the Islamic Republic of Iran features two different noteworthy themes. On the obverse of the note is the Ayatollah Khomeini and on the reverse is the Mosque of Omar. The reverse has a deep religious significance. Also known as the Dome of the Rock, this mosque is located in Jerusalem. For the Muslims, the rock in the center of the dome is believed to be the spot from which Muhammed ascended to God in heaven. To those of the Jewish or Christian faith, the stone is the site where Abraham fulfilled God’s test to see if he would be willing to sacrifice his own son Isaac.
