The Purple Heart was established by George Washington in 1782 as an award of military merit. Although it was meant to be given as a permanent and ongoing award, only a few were presented and it fell into disuse. In 1932, it was reactivated as an award for wounds received in wars up to and including World War I. Outside of a brief time period (less than a year) when this medal was also awarded for meritorious service, the Purple Heart has only been used as an award for those wounded in combat. This medal has also been awarded posthumously. With a recent change in U.S. government policy, the much beloved and respected Purple Heart, along with other medals, can now be enjoyed by collectors and military history buffs alike.
