After losing the presidential election of 1960 to J.F.K., Richard Nixon decided to run in California’s 1962 gubernatorial election as the Republican candidate. At the time, California was a “red” or Republican state, and it was felt that Nixon would beat the incumbent, Edmund G. Brown, Sr. (Jerry Brown’s father). However, when the votes were counted, Nixon would lose by almost 300,000 popular votes. In his concession speech, Nixon accused the media of favoring his opponent Brown and stated that this was “his last press conference” and that “you won’t have Nixon to kick around anymore.”
