Manilla (Slave Money) from the 1843 Ship Wreck Duoro
manilla slave money

The trade in slaves had been going on for many years during the early 1800’s and had brought great wealth, especially to England. The local chiefs in Africa, traded their human cargo for many types of commodities and Manilla were one of the most favored. Manilla, manufactured in Birmingham, England, between 1830-1850, were shipped out to Benin on the Slave Coast of Africa. These Manilla were traded for slaves. These unfortunate slaves were then packed into the ships and taken to the West Indies. The Manilla we offer were raised by divers from the wreck of the English Schooner “Duoro” which sunk off the isles of Scilly in 1843.
