The Iron Cross was a military decoration of the Kingdom of Prussia, and later of Germany. It was established by King Frederick William III in 1813, and was first awarded to soldiers during the wars of liberation against Napoleon. Issued for battlefield bravery, this medal was also presented during the Franco-German war, the First World War and the Second World War. It was designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel. It displays a four-pointed cross which signifies the cross borne by the Teutonic Knights of the 14th Century.
